Aww, a sweet ending. As for the whole gay "culture" thing, I understand what they/you are getting at. I'm all for equal marriage rights, and being open with yourself, but being a gay man does not mean you have to love pink, house music, and feather boas. Or that lesbians must all be butch. Some famous gays are almost insults to others, like Adam Lambert, Rosie O'Donnell, and Perez Hilton; being gay does not make you special or give you the right to be a disgusting hypocrite. You can be gay, acknowledge it, support gay rights, and not be offensive. Look at Ian McKellen and Neil Patrick Harris (Gandalf and Dr. Horrible are both awesome characters...).
